What’s In A Name?

Gerardus Mercator was a 16th-century cartographer who developed the map projection which bears his name, and is used to this day by Google Maps and others.

The magic of the Mercator projection is that it was the first to allow sailors to determine a line of constant compass bearing by simply plotting a straight line, or rhumb line, on the map. Without this innovation, trade – and the economic development that accompanied it – would have been slowed as sailors would have lacked the tools to plot the course to reach their destination.

The consultants at Mercator International provide advisory services that allow clients to plot a direct path to success through a complex commercial, operational, and regulatory environment.
